It is estimated that only 3% of the R&D budget in Egypt is spent by the private sector, mainly in the areas of food industries, chemical and petrochemical industries, electronics, material and pharmaceutical industries. One of the most important entities that support industrial innovation and technology transfer in Egypt is the Industrial Council for Technology and Innovation, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Foreign Trade. The technology centres serve the Egyptian industries across disciplines, namely; engineering industries, agro & food industries; marble and quarries; textile & RMG industries; plastics industries; furniture industries; leather & leather-tanning industries, as well as fashion & jewellery industries. Some of the Egyptian enterprises rely on R&D to enhance their performance. Examples are: Elsewedy Electric; Misr Compressor Manufacturing companies (ZMC Egypt); ABB Arab in the areas of electrical and mechanical engineering; Misr Food Additives (MIFAD); Arab Dairy Food; Kraft Food Egypt, Enjoy and Domty in the food industries; and Modern Building and Scib Egypt are conducting R&D in the area of chemical industry.
